Stock Number: 29 Maker: Musik Mitching Year: ca 1850 Condition: very good Price: $1500 Currency: US dollars Top: spruce Back: unknown, maybe cherry Sides: unknown, maybe cherry Finish: 'Hardened' French polish Scale Length: 620 mm Nut Width: 4.5 mm Origin: Leipzig, Germany Availability: sold Description: Small mid nineteenth century guitar made in Leipzig Germany with mustache bridge and original tuning machines. It plays easily, with a short 620mm string length, and has a very sweet voice. It is in very good, restored condition with a few cracks and dings all of which are repaired and/or braced. The label says: "Musik Mitching Princely Liepzig court instrument maker Made in Leipzig with the medal awarded by the association of acedemic, educating music instructors of Koln am Rhein. At expert exhibitions, awarded gold and silver medals and high praises. Owner of the Order for Art and Science Supplier of many court and city orchestras as well as military and navy." I play this guitar with gut trebles and it sounds great! A soft, 'gig bag' case is included in the price. In restoring this instrument I did the following: 1) reset the bridge removing bolts from a previous repair 2) removed (and reset) the back to reglue braces that were loose on the top and the back and to repair cracks 3) converted the brige saddle from a fret to a bone saddle. The fret was not original but was probably similar to the original set up. 4) made a new nut 5) It was finished with a heavy, stained varnish. I removed this finish and refinished the body with French Polish. Tuners: original Neckwood: unknown - lacquered black Fingerboard: unknown - stained black Model: Medal Winner
